23rd World Scouts Jamboree Japan, Unit 40 Badge Design - April 2014
Client: Nottinghamshire Scouts Group Unit 40
February 2014, I was asked to help create a new badge design to represent the Nottinghamshire scouts group, Unit 40. This involved visiting the group on their first weekend together, giving them a tutorial on the manga art style as well as some basic information about Japanese culture. The scouts then used this to come up with ideas and character that could be used on their badges; which would represent the county of Nottinghamshire as well as the trip to Japan. As only a few fully embraced the task, I came up with a few character designs of my own, using the scouts ideas as inspiration.
The group came up with the “Hood’s 40” tag line, to represent one of the most recognised Nottinghamshire legend, Robin Hood. This along with the character with a Robin Hood feel would be a great way to show off their pride of being from the county.
In the end, the final design chosen was a character drawn by one of the scouts, which I had rendered digitally. I will note that the design was created using reference from a how to draw manga book, but was adapted to fit the brief. I made a few alterations for the final design and it was approved for printing.
